  1. Your contacts are readers who asked to hear from you.
  2. In this video, you'll look after that list.
  3. Open Contacts in the sidebar.
  4. Readers appear here only when they opt in, for example by ticking a box on your ARC application form.
  5. They can ask for invitations to your future ARCs, join your reader list, or both.
  6. The Permission column shows which.
  7. Search by name or email, or choose a status or a tag, then select Filters.
  8. Only Eligible contacts with ARC invitations permission can be invited.
  9. Suppressed contacts, for example readers who opted out, are left out.
  10. Open a contact to see their permission history: what they agreed to, where and when.
  11. If a reader later withdraws or opts out, History records that too.
  12. On the right, you'll see their invitations and campaigns.
  13. Tags help you organise readers.
  14. Some are added automatically, such as ARC or Street Team, from the campaign a reader applied to.
  15. They can't be changed, and they don't count towards your limits.
  16. To add your own tag, tick the readers you want and select Add tag.
  17. Type Early reviewers, choose Create Early reviewers, then select Add to 2 contacts.
  18. You can have up to 30 tags, and up to 5 of your own on each contact.
  19. Manage tags opens the Tags page.
  20. Here you can create, rename or delete your own tags.
  21. Deleting a tag doesn't remove any contacts.
  22. Select Export reader list to download a CSV of readers who joined your reader list and haven't left it.
  23. Readers who only asked for ARC invitations aren't included.
  24. To export just one group, choose a tag, select Filters, then export.
  25. To block an address or a whole domain, open Blocked readers.
  26. Enter it and select Block.
  27. A domain blocks everyone at it, but not its subdomains.
  28. What blocking changes explains the effect.
  29. Pending ARC requests are declined with your usual decline email, and future applications and requests are declined automatically.
  30. Matching contacts leave your contacts and mailing list.
  31. Issued copies stay available.
  32. Readers aren't told they're blocked.
  33. To block several at once, select Import a list.
  34. Paste one address or domain per line, or upload a CSV or text file, then select Check list.
  35. Nothing is saved until you check the summary and select Block 2.
  36. Unblocking doesn't bring back removed contacts or declined requests.
  37. Next, invite your readers to a new ARC.

Written steps (text version of this video)

This walkthrough shows your reader contacts: what each permission means, a contact’s permission history, your own tags, the reader list export, and blocking addresses and domains one at a time or from a list.

  1. Open Contacts.

Open Contacts in the sidebar. Readers appear here only when they opt in, for example on your ARC application form.

  2. Check the permissions.

Check the Permission column: ARC invitations, Reader list, or both.

  3. Search and filter.

Use search, a status or a tag, then select Filters.

  4. Open a contact.

Open a contact to see their permission history, their tags and their invitations and campaigns.

  5. Automatic tags.

ARC and Street Team tags are added automatically. They can’t be changed and don’t count towards your limits.

  6. Add your own tag.

Tick contacts, select Add tag, type or choose a tag and confirm. Up to 30 tags, and up to 5 of your own on each contact.

  7. Manage your tags.

Select Manage tags to rename or delete your tags. Deleting a tag doesn’t remove contacts.

  8. Export your reader list.

Select Export reader list to download a CSV of readers who joined your reader list. Choose a tag and select Filters to export only those readers.

  9. Block an address or a domain.

Select Blocked readers, enter an email address or @domain and select Block.

  10. What blocking changes.

Open What blocking changes to see the effect.

  11. Block a list.

Select Import a list, paste or upload it, select Check list, check the summary and confirm.

  12. Unblocking.

Unblocking doesn’t restore removed contacts, mailing-list membership or declined requests.

Check you’re done

  • You have checked your contacts’ permissions and permission history.
  • Your chosen contacts have the tags you added.
  • Your reader list export contains the group you selected.
  • Any addresses or domains you chose to block appear in Blocked readers.

Common questions

Does Export reader list include every contact?

No. It exports readers who joined your reader list, not readers who only asked for ARC invitations. Select a tag and apply Filters to export that group; search and status do not change the export.

Can I change automatic tags?

No. Automatic tags record where readers came from and cannot be changed. They do not count towards your own tag limits.

Does unblocking restore a reader’s contact or request?

No. Unblocking does not restore removed contacts, mailing-list membership or declined requests.
